Dreaming of a Shirtdress

I searched for my dream shirtdress for a very, very long time.  In my head it was a crisp white cotton, white shell buttons with pleating down the front, and side ties to emphasize the waist.

I tried on many variations over the years but to no avail.  There was always something that irked me, whether it was the length (too long), the silouette (pregnant much?!), or the quality of material (helloo synthetic blends!).  Well I finally found it…in the maternity wear section of a thrift shop, in a size Large.  Don’t you just love happy endings?

If you’re looking for something similar, this top from Forever 21 is a beautiful alternative. (The lavender shade shown here is sold out, but I like it in white better anyway.) With a looser fitting top like this, I pair it with skinny jeans, leggings, jean-leggings (pocket-jean styling in a legging material), or a pair of shorts.

I love tunic tops and shirt dresses that cover up your bum!  It lengthens the torso, skims the widest part of your thighs, and if you’re wearing leggings, it doesn’t look offensive. (!!!)

I think the key to wearing a shirtdress like this and not looking pregnant is by going up a size or two.  I like having the shoulder seams slouch down a little bit with an overall loose fit, like a man’s dress shirt.  Just as long as your waist is defined (think side ties, or even a cut of grosgrain ribbon from your local craft store), you won’t look like you’re walking the ‘walk of shame’ in the middle of the day! Hehe.

How about a couple different looks?  Everything shown is under $50:

Like the ever-classic white button down, you can change your look with just a few key elements.  Roll the shirt sleeves up to your elbows and wah-lah!  You are chic, comfy and ever-so stylish!
